Questions
How many countries are in the Schengen area?
29: 25 EU members plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. Bulgaria and Romania became full members on January 1, 2025, and Croatia joined on January 1, 2023.
Is Ireland in Schengen?
No. Ireland is in the EU but keeps its own visa rules and a Common Travel Area with the UK. Days in Ireland don't count toward your 90 Schengen days.
Is the UK in Schengen?
No. The UK was never part of Schengen, before or after it left the EU. Days in the UK don't count toward your 90.
Is Cyprus in Schengen?
Not yet. Cyprus is an EU member that is expected to join later, so for now days in Cyprus don't count toward your 90.
Is Switzerland in Schengen?
Yes. Switzerland isn't in the EU, but it has applied Schengen in full since 2008. Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein are in the same position.
How long can you stay in Schengen?
If you don't need a visa, for example with a US, UK, Canadian, or Australian passport, you can stay 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. Every day in any of the 29 countries counts toward the same 90, and both the day you arrive and the day you leave count.
