I build apps for the App Store, one at a time, with no one to ask.

For most of my working life, building something meant asking first. Ask a partner, ask a board, ask an investor, ask a budget whether it could carry one more idea. Good ideas waited in line behind the approvals, and some of them never got out.

This is a new stage. There is no one to ask for permission and no investor to convince. There is one person, a Mac, and a question worth a few days of work. If the answer is good, it ships. If it isn’t, I learned something, and the next one is better.

Apps are how I think out loud. For someone like me, they are a form of expression: a way to show what is possible now, and how a familiar thing looks from a different point of view. A day counter that knows the tax rules of 239 countries. A to-do list that knows you are a parent, a founder, and a runner, and keeps score for each. A habit tracker built on the same idea.

The promise I make with each one is the same. Bring a new perspective to the problem, and make someone’s day a little better. Not their life. Their day, every day.

I started with Visited Countries. After two years in Asia I wanted to see which countries I had been to, so I built an app that reads it from my photos. The map raised the next questions, how many days in each place and what they mean, and Flags Tax and Schengen Calculator followed. Those three apps were also a first for me: from the first idea to the App Store to the first paying customer, with no other person involved. It was one of the most empowering things I have ever done.
