Who this is for
You build an app, sell consulting, or run booked calls, and some customers still pick up the phone. You can't answer while you're deep in work, on a flight, or asleep in another time zone. An AI receptionist answers for you, and you call back only the people who matter.
What it does
It answers the calls you forward to it, in a natural voice. It answers questions from what you give it, books calls into your calendar, takes messages, and transfers a call to you when it should. Most set up without code: you add your website, pick a voice, and turn on call forwarding.
Two ways to do it
- A ready-made receptionist answers your line this week: Dialzara, Goodcall, Rosie, and Smith.ai. Pick this if you want calls answered and nothing to build.
- A voice platform lets you build your own phone agent: Vapi, Retell AI, Synthflow, Bland AI, and ElevenLabs. Pick this if the phone is part of your product, or you want custom call flows. All five have official MCP servers, so your own agent, like Claude, can create and change the phone agent for you.
How the ready-made ones differ
- Dialzara also makes outbound calls for follow-ups and reminders.
- Goodcall lets you build and test an agent for free before you connect a number.
- Rosie has phone apps, so you can follow every call from wherever you are.
- Smith.ai can pass hard calls to real people, for the calls that need a human.
How the platforms differ
- Vapi is API-first, for founders who build in code.
- Retell AI has a no-code studio with testing built in.
- Synthflow has a visual flow designer.
- ElevenLabs leads on voice quality and languages.
- Bland AI is built for large companies, with a self-serve option for technical founders.
What breaks in the first weeks
- Calls go to voicemail instead of the AI. Your carrier's voicemail picks up before the forwarded call arrives. Turn off carrier voicemail or lengthen the ring time, then call yourself to test.
- Important calls get treated as routine. List the words that mean urgent for you, like a customer whose account is down, and tie them to an immediate transfer or text.
- Names and numbers come out wrong. Have it read key details back and send a text confirmation.
- Callers can't reach you. Make sure asking for a person always works, even if it means a callback later.
- The same mistake repeats. Read call transcripts every day for the first two weeks, then every week.
When it's worth it
If a missed call costs you a customer or a deal, an AI receptionist earns its place fast. If your customers mostly write, start with an AI agent for email and chat, and add the phone later.
