The one-person company is real now: what one founder can do
A one-person company is a business run by one founder, with AI agents doing much of the operations and partners doing the physical work. In October 2026, Anthropic bought Mithril Medicine, a one-person biotech whose founder ran experiments across 11 labs with Claude. ZeroCrew lists AI agents job by job, so you can start with tools that exist today.
On October 27, 2026, Anthropic announced it had bought Mithril Medicine, a one-person company developing treatments for two rare forms of muscular dystrophy. According to Anthropic, founder Cody Tranbarger used Claude to organize contracts, logistics, and experiments with 11 outside labs, and took one possible treatment from idea to promising results in mice in under 18 months. ZeroCrew reads the deal as the clearest proof yet that one person can run serious work.
Drug development usually takes large teams, big budgets, and years of coordination. ZeroCrew's view is that if one founder with an AI agent can run a drug program, the work in your industry is likely within reach too. ZeroCrew wrote this guide to show what changed, what Claude and other agents can already do, and how to take the first step toward your own one-person company this week.
Mithril's results are early, and Anthropic says so: most of its drug research is preclinical, meaning the drugs haven't been tested in people yet. ZeroCrew includes that caveat because the lesson isn't that every one-person company wins. The lesson is that one person can now do much of the work of a team, and that changes who gets to start.
What is a one-person company?
A one-person company is a business with one founder and no employees, where AI agents handle much of the operations and outside partners do the physical or licensed work. ZeroCrew's directory is built for this kind of company: it lists AI agents and tools job by job, from support to finance, so one founder can cover the roles a team used to fill.
Businesses without employees are already the most common kind in the US. According to the US Census Bureau (2025), businesses with paid employees made up only 21.6% of all US businesses in 2023, and businesses without employees grew 2.7% a year from 2012 to 2023, against 1.1% for employers. ZeroCrew's bet is that AI agents let those solo businesses grow bigger, not only more numerous.
What did one founder with Claude do at Mithril?
At Mithril Medicine, one founder handed much of a biotech's coordination to Claude. Anthropic says Cody Tranbarger used Claude to organize contracts, logistics, and experiments with 11 external labs, and delegated many other parts of running the company. ZeroCrew points out the split that made it work: the founder kept the science and the decisions.
Claude's work for Anthropic's drug research partners shows AI agents doing real work at larger companies too. Anthropic reports that at Enveda, Claude checked 1,061 pages of manufacturing records, caught all 11 issues human reviewers found plus seven they missed, and cut review time from over 25 hours to under three. ZeroCrew highlights that result because careful document review is a job in almost every industry.
Claude has cut months of drug development work down to hours or weeks. According to Anthropic, Claude drafted one regulatory document for Enveda in four hours instead of about three months by hand, and generated roughly 35,000 antibody designs for Divergence Labs in about a month. ZeroCrew's reading: the slow, paper-heavy parts of a business are where one founder with an agent gains the most time.
Which industries can one person with AI agents change?
Industries where companies grew big because of coordination, paperwork, and research are where ZeroCrew expects one founder with AI agents to find the biggest openings. ZeroCrew points to law, finance, real estate, online retail, media, local services, and software, where much of the work is emails, documents, scheduling, and analysis that agents can now help carry.
Every industry runs on the same jobs, which is why one founder can find agents for a company in almost any of them. ZeroCrew's directory is organized by job instead of by industry: customer service, sales, finance, operations, and more. A dentist, a law firm, and an app studio all answer calls, send invoices, and follow up with customers.
Work that needs a lab, a license, or a pair of hands doesn't stop a one-person company. Mithril Medicine, the one-person biotech Anthropic bought, used 11 outside labs for its experiments, and Claude helped coordinate them. ZeroCrew's advice is the same for any industry: rent the physical or licensed work from partners, and let agents handle the contracts, schedules, and follow-ups between them.
What can Claude do that most founders never try?
Claude can do far more than answer questions: it can coordinate suppliers through your email and apps, check long documents, research a field, build software, and draft contracts for a professional to review. ZeroCrew's page on Claude lists what it does today, and most founders use only a small part of it.
- Run your operations. Connect Claude to your email, calendar, and documents with connectors, and it drafts replies, plans schedules, and tracks follow-ups. ChatGPT is the other common choice. Pick the one that connects to the apps you already use.
- Check long documents. Give Claude contracts, manuals, or records, and ask it to find errors, missing terms, or risks before a person signs off.
- Research a market or a field. Claude's Research mode, on paid plans, runs multi-source investigations, and ChatGPT's deep research writes reports with sources.
- Build your own tools. Claude Code or Codex write and change code for you, so a founder who isn't an engineer can build an internal tool or an app. Pick Claude Code if you pay for Claude, and Codex if you use ChatGPT.
- Work in the background. Claude Duet briefs you each morning and asks before it acts. It's a waitlist preview for Pro and Max subscribers in the US as of November 2026. Manus is another agent that plans and completes multi-step tasks.
- Draft contracts and applications. Claude drafts first versions of contracts, grant applications, and filings, and a lawyer or accountant reviews them before they go out.
Claude still needs a person to check its work on anything that matters. ZeroCrew recommends treating every AI agent like a capable new hire: give it clear instructions, check its first results closely, and widen what it does as it earns trust. Even at Mithril Medicine, the founder made the scientific decisions.
Why can anyone start a one-person company now?
Anyone can start a one-person company now because AI help tends to lift beginners and AI agents take on longer tasks every year. ZeroCrew's directory shows what's available: agents for the jobs a company needs exist today, and several, including Claude and ChatGPT, have free plans, so the cost of trying is low.
In one large study, AI help lifted beginners the most. In "Generative AI at Work" (NBER, 2023), Erik Brynjolfsson, Danielle Li, and Lindsey Raymond found that an AI assistant raised the issues customer support agents resolved per hour by 14% on average and by 34% for novice and low-skilled workers. ZeroCrew takes that as encouragement: you don't need to be an expert to start.
AI agents keep taking on longer tasks. Researchers at METR found that the length of software tasks AI models can complete with 50% success has doubled about every seven months since 2019 (arXiv, 2025). ZeroCrew's reading for founders: if that trend holds, jobs an agent can't handle today may be ones it handles next year.
How do you start a one-person company with AI agents?
Start a one-person company by picking a problem you care about, listing the jobs it needs, and giving each job an agent while you keep the decisions. ZeroCrew's job pages make the third step quick: each one lists the agents ZeroCrew researched for that job, ranked so you can compare them.
- Pick a problem you'd work on anyway. The would-you-do-it-anyway test helps you check.
- List the jobs. Write down every job the business needs: answering customers, selling, invoicing, building, and research.
- Give each job an agent. Find it in the directory. For phone calls, compare AI receptionists. For code, compare coding agents.
- Keep the decisions. Like Mithril's founder, you decide what to build, who to work with, and what ships.
- Rent the physical work. Labs, manufacturers, couriers, or licensed professionals do what agents can't.
- Start with one job this week. Hand one recurring task to an agent, check the result, then add the next.
How does ZeroCrew help you run a company alone?
ZeroCrew helps one founder cover the jobs in a company with AI agents. The directory lists the agents and tools ZeroCrew researched for each job, the public MCP server at https://zerocrew.ai/api/mcp/public lets your own agent search them, and AI agent setup puts them to work for you.
If you'd rather not set up AI agents yourself, ZeroCrew does it for you. After a free discovery call, ZeroCrew picks the best agents for each job, connects them to the tools your business already uses, and keeps them up to date as new models come out, starting at $1,000 a month as of November 2026. You keep the part of the work you love.

Questions founders ask
Can one person really run a company with AI agents?
Yes. Mithril Medicine is a recent example: one founder ran a drug program across 11 outside labs with Claude, and Anthropic bought the company in 2026. The founder keeps the decisions, agents handle much of the operations, and partners do the physical work.
Is a one-person unicorn possible?
A one-person company worth $1 billion is a popular goal among founders, and AI agents now cover many of the jobs a large business needs. Whether a company reaches that value depends on its market and its product, not on how many people work there.
Do you need to code to use Claude as a founder?
No. Claude works in plain language in its app, and connectors link it to your email, calendar, and documents. If you want to build software, Claude Code, on a paid Claude plan, writes the code from your description.
Which AI agents should a solo founder start with?
Start with the job that takes most of your time. For many founders that's email and admin, customer calls, or bookkeeping, and ZeroCrew's directory lists the agents for each one so you can compare them before you choose.
Zero employees. Never build alone.
