AI is getting close to doing most of the work people do today. Some people call what comes next the post-labor era. I think they're right, and it changes what a company is.
What an employee is
Today, an employee is someone who works because they have to. They need the money to provide for themselves and their family. There's nothing wrong with that. It's how the world has worked for a long time.
But we're moving toward a world where everyone can do what they want. When agents do the work, people won't have to sell their time to get by.
Why founders build
Founders and makers don't build for a salary. They build because they want to see a change in the world. Money shows how big that change is.
So zero employees isn't about refusing to pay anyone. It's about working only with people who want to be there, while agents do the rest.
Alone is the fastest way to move
I'm not against teams. But right now, the fastest way to move is alone. You decide in the morning and ship the same day, and you don't have to convince anyone first.
If you find someone who is perfectly aligned with you, build together. You'll probably go much further. But I'll warn you: it isn't easy. If you find that person, you're lucky.
If you need people, make them partners
If your company does need more people, I think everyone should own a stake in it. They come in as partners, not employees.
The world is getting richer. Soon people will choose to work on something only if they share in what it becomes. A company where everyone is a partner is a much stronger company.
The time you get back
Once agents run the work, you have time. You can travel and see the world. You can spend more time with your partner, your kids, your family, and your friends.
There's no boss above you, and nobody depends on you for a paycheck. That's a kind of freedom most people never get.
It can feel lonely
